Energy Prices Could Soar

Sources within the energy industry are warning that a very cold winter could see energy prices soar. There is even the possibility of some industries having to ration energy use. The National Grid have confirmed that this year there will be a very low margin of energy capability. This margin will be sufficient to see the UK through a mild winter. However, if there were to be an extremely harsh winter fuel prices could very well soar as supply struggles to keep pace with demand.

Although oil and gas prices are forecast to stay low for the next couple of years a very cold winter could result in unforeseen price rises as the UK power supply dwindles due to the closure of the most polluting coal power stations.

Last week the National Grid confirmed that the spare capacity could be as low as 1.2% - the lowest since 2007-2008. It is believed that as energy supplies fall then prices will inevitably have to rise if only to encourage people to use energy more carefully.
